It might surprise you to learn to that polymer clay actually doesn't contain any natural clay whatsoever. In fact, it would be more apt to describe it as a synthetic modeling compound. The main component of polymer clay is polyvinyl chloride, more commonly known as PVC. It's a fantastic medium that holds its shape incredibly well, can be pigmented any color you could possibly imagine, and is as durable as plastic once it is cured in a hot oven. It also has the benefit of being hypoallergenic and incredibly lightweight, making it the perfect medium for wearable art.
Nowadays, polymer clay comes in a wide variety of vibrant colors, textures, weights, and finishes that allow it to imitate all kinds of materials such as stone, metal, or wood. The only limiting factor when creating with polymer clay is your own imagination--and the amount of clay you have on hand!
